The impact of 60s music in today´s world

I decided to talk about this topic when I was watching a show called Glee, finally realizing the real impact of the 60s. Most songs from the show were from the 60s and 70s and reminded me of how dominant those decades were for the music in the following years and why it is still affecting our modern days.

All music artists, in general, were inspired by the protests of the Vietnam War. Those protests, connected with the ones about feminism and sexual liberation, led to a revolution from Broadway to rock culture. In this post, I am going to show you some of the artists that most influenced that decade and our society nowadays.

"Streisand Rising"

In a time when rock and roll music was very much a part of society´s daily life, a little known singer named Barbra Streisand rose and made an exceptional career.

During the year 1960, Streisand moved to Manhattan to pursue her dream of being a performer and, in 1961, she auditioned for acting and singing part in I Can Get It For You Wholesale. Her performance on her debut earned a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress. Barbra Streisand was becoming a star on Broadway, lending her voice, in 1968, to the anti-Vietnam War cause. In January, she performed at Broadway For Peace with the play West Side Story, which raised money for members of Congress who were up for election and who opposed the Vietnam War.

Fleetwood Mac

The rock band was born in 1967 with the turbulence of that decade, and it was one of the most successful bands in the world. One interesting fact about this band is that the Rumours album (one of the best-selling albums of the band) was recorded while the band was falling apart. Because of that, it is a very emotional album with different perspectives. Even though the release happened a few decades ago, Rumours has been ever-present throughout generations.

Go on your own way, Fleetwood Mac

Besides the artists aforementioned, others had the opportunity to revolutionize the 60s like Dione Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, and many more.

Shows like Glee and others are a way of promoting music from the old days and prove to us that the decades of the 60s and 70s had an enormous impact on music nowadays.
